Raul Julia Grant 2011
The Raul Julia Grant will be presented annually to an aspiring Puerto Rican filmmaker in order to enable him or her to attend a graduate program in film related studies at an accredited institution in the United States, Canada or selected countries in Europe and Latin America.
The Grant will award an amount up to $15,000 dollars towards tuition expenses or 50% of tuition expenses, whichever is less, per year for a period of two years for a Master’s Degree in Direction, Production, Scriptwriting, Film Studies, Cinematography, Editing, Special Effects Animation, Animation for Film and Music Scoring.
The Puerto Rico Film Commission will appoint the members of the Selection Committee- comprised of members of the local film industry professionals.
The Committee will evaluate all submitted work and make a final selection. Nominees will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, creative and technical ability, communications skills and filmmaking experience.

The grant has the requirement of one year of professional or an equivalent of 1500 certified hours in film industry related work in Puerto Rico following the completion of the graduate degree, providing that if the candidate does not comply with this requirement, he/she will have to pay back to the PRFC all the funds granted under this program.

1. Do I need to be born in Puerto Rico in order to qualify for the grant?Yes.

3. What document proves that I was born in Puerto Rico?
Birth certificate.
4. What documents prove that I am a resident of Puerto Rico?
Driver’s license and one of the following: voters’ registration card, tax return filing certificate and evidence of property ownership in Puerto Rico.
5. What graduate degrees qualify for the grant?
Direction, Production, Scriptwriting, Production Design, Wardrobe Design, Editing, Special Effects, Animation for Film and Music Scoring.
6. What is the criteria for judging an application?
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, creative and technical ability, communications skills and range of filmmaking experience.

Applicants must:
- Be Puerto Rican born and reside in the island for the past three years. Birth certificate and proof of residency will be required.
- Have a bachelor’s degree and experience in filmmaking.
- Apply to a university institution in the following countries: United States, Canada, México, Argentina, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
